Regarding my observation that extreme elements in the pro-Israel lobby are
behind the campaign to stop the confirmation of Chuck Hagel as secretary of
defense, my friend wrote:
"I think you might be off on this one. The neocons hate Hagel because of the
Iraq war. They might have been using the Israel issue to go after him, but I
don't think Israel is the root of the matter."
The root of the matter is, indeed, Iraq: the centerpiece of the muscular
foreign policy advanced by the now-defunct Project for the New American Century,
founded by William Kristol and other neocon architects of the Iraq War.
