Institute for Palestine Studies: The 1948 Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe

This article, excerpted and adapted from the early chapters of a new book, emphasizes the systematic preparations that laid the ground for the expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians from what became Israel in 1948. While sketching the context and diplomatic and political developments of the period, the article highlights in particular a multi-year “Village Files” project (1940–47) involving the systematic compilation of maps and intelligence for each Arab village and the elaboration—under the direction of an inner “caucus” of fewer than a dozen men led by David Ben-Gurion—of a series of military plans culminating in Plan Dalet, according to which the 1948 war was fought. The article ends with a statement of one of the author’s underlying goals in writing the book: to make the case for a paradigm of ethnic cleansing to replace the paradigm of war as the basis for the scholarly research of, and the public debate about, 1948.

ILAN PAPPÉ, an Israeli historian and professor of political science at Haifa University, is the author of a number of books, including The Making of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1947–1951 (I.B. Tauris, 1994) and A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples (Cambridge University Press, 2004). The current article is extracted from early chapters of his latest book, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (Oneworld Publications, Oxford, England, forthcoming in October 2006).

Mohammed Omer Stranded in Egypt

Dear Friends of the Washington Report,

Please find a letter we have faxed 13 Senators and six members of the House of Representatives regarding our prize-winning Gaza correspondent Mohammed Omer who is trapped in Egypt. Please call or fax your own representatives to help this young man get home.

Mr. Omer feels sure that with your help he could get permission to return to Gaza through a different border crossing and be home in time to celebrate Eid with his family. Or Israel can open the Rafah crossing again to help Palestinians, like Omer, get home to their families.

December 19, 2006

Dear Senator,

Our award-winning Gaza correspondent, Mohammed Omer, just completed a very effective U.S. speaking tour. He has received hundreds of e-mails a day (two of which are attached) thanking him for telling Americans about daily life in Gaza. Now he, along with thousands of other Gazans, cannot return home because the Rafah crossing is closed. Unlike several thousands trapped at the actual border, Mohammed is fortunate to be in a hotel in Cairo. Like his fellow Gazans, however, he is waiting in limbo, and frantic. At 22, he is the oldest of seven children and the head of his household. His mother and brothers need him home most urgently.

The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv has asked Israel to permit Mohammed to cross at Rafah, but Israel has refused to reopen the border. Our embassy asked if Mohammed could return through another border—Allenby or Eretz—but Israel will not deviate from its very stringent rule: a Palestinian must return through the same crossing from which he left.

According to the American staffmember we spoke with, the U.S. Embassy does not have the “horsepower” to convince Israel on its own. This person suggested we generate “high level interest” to convince Israel to reopen the Rafah border for “humanitarian reasons.”

We have written Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to ask for her intervention. Now we are asking members of Congress who care deeply about peace in this region to ask Israel to open the Rafah crossing and allow the thousands of Palestinians stranded there to return home.

Mohammed’s nationwide speaking tour built bridges and sparked peaceful dialogue. C-SPAN covered his talk and rebroadcast it seven times, generating wonderful responses from around the country. Please help this young journalist return safely home to his family, who need him during these uncertain times in Gaza.

Sincerely,

Andrew I. Killgore

The oil connection in the Iraq Study Group: Blood for Oil, Loud and Clear: Abdus Sattar Ghazali

Interestingly, the Iraq Study Group report released last week emphasized that an equitable oil law was a necessary cornerstone to the process of national reconciliation and thus to ending the war. In a major far reaching recommendation to deal with the situation in Iraq , the report called for opening Iraq to privatize foreign oil and energy companies, providing direct technical assistance for the "drafting" of a new national oil law for Iraq, and assuring that all of Iraq's oil revenues accrue to the central government.

The Secret Relationship Between Israel and Oil: What the U. S. Media Hides by Wendy Campbell

The article in the Wall Street Journal dated September 21, 2004, that rankled me into finally writing this article which has been brewing in my mind for some time was one by Jeffrey Ball entitled "As Prices Soar, Doomsayers Provoke Debate on Oil's Future". The sub-title was: "In a 1970's echo, Dr. Campbell (no relation to me!) Warns Supply Is Drying Up, but Industry Isn't Worried".

Now let me explain to you that I have already come to the conclusion a while ago that this controversy about the 'shortage of oil' is being pushed forward by mostly pro-Israel forces for their own narrow agenda that has nothing to do with the vast majority of the American people's interests.

Even in this article, it is explained that: "Dr. Campbell is at the center of a small but suddenly influential band of contrarians known as the 'peak oil movement'".

Ten Fallacies About the Violence in Iraq: AlterNet

The distortions about the violence in Iraq persist even as the mayhem increases. Here are ten of the worst myths being spread in the media.

The escalating violence in Iraq's civil war is now earning considerable attention as we pass yet another milestone -- U.S. occupation there, in two weeks, will exceed the length of the Second World War for America. While the news media have finally started to grapple with the colossal amount of killing, a number of misunderstandings persist. Some are willful deceptions. Let's look at a few of them:

Pitting the West Against Islam: M. Shahid Alam for Palestine Chronicle

Gates and the Iran Arms Sales: Robert Parry

The shipments not only were politically sensitive, but also violated federal export laws – in part because Iran was officially designated a terrorist state. So, playing down Iran’s hand in terrorism worked for the White House whether supported by the facts or not.

At that time, Gates was deputy director in charge of the DI, putting him in a key bureaucratic position as the CIA worked to justify geopolitical openings to Iran. Even earlier, in spring 1985, Gates had overseen the production of a controversial National Intelligence Estimate that had warned of Soviet inroads in Iran and conjured up supposed moderates in the Iranian government.

That Gates, two years later, would make exculpatory claims about the CIA’s reporting – assertions contradicted by an internal DI report – suggests that he remained more interested in protecting the Reagan administration’s flanks than being straight with the American public.

In his affidavit, [Ray] McGovern wrote that after Gates’s exculpatory articles in November 1987, “efforts to correct the record remained unsuccessful.”

[McGovern’s report to senior DI management about the Iran-terrorism issue was dated Oct. 30, 1987; his affidavit was signed Oct. 5, 1991, during Gates’s confirmation to be CIA director, but the sworn statement was not made public at that time.]

Lebanon and the Political Context of the Assassination of Pierre Gemayel: by Feroze H. Mithiborwala

The US policy over Palestine which is seen through the prism of Jewish and Christian Zionists is itself being challenged. Undoubtedly Palestine is the core issue and only a just solution for the people of Palestine and Israel will finally end seemingly endless cycle of hatred, violence and wars.

The struggle between the hardcore Neo-cons and Zionists represented by Bush, Cheney, Rice, Perle and Wolfowitz and the "pragmatic imperialists" led by James Baker and Hamilton as well as key sections of the Democrats will decide the future course of US foreign policy.

It is in this context that we have to analyse the assassination of Pierre Gemayel who was brutally killed on the November 21, 2006. On 19th November, Sheikh Hasan Nasrallah called for the resignation of the government and clearly stated that the Lebanese people will not accept a government that operates on on the dictats of the US embassy in Beirut. He called for a government of National Unity and for elections soon after. Earlier the cabinet ministers of the Hizbullah and the Amal resigned. General Michel Aoun who represents the majority of the Christian Maronite community, stated that the government has lost the moral right to rule as the majority of the people are no longer represented.

US in contact with anti-Iran Kurds: PKK

MOUNT QANDIL, Iraq (AFP) - The United States government is in contact with Kurds struggling against Iran, a top rebel leader of the anti-Turkish Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) told AFP in an interview.

Cemil "Cuma" Bayik, one of the main leaders and a founder of the movement that has struggled for Kurdish self-determination for the past 30 years, said the US was in touch with the Party for Freedom in Life in Kurdistan (PJAK) in Iran, but that it was not helping actively.

Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh revealed recently in the New Yorker magazine that American forces were supporting the PJAK movement as part of their strategy to destabilize the Tehran government.

Why Are Canadians Dying in Afghanistan? For Oil? by John W. Warnock

Remembrance Day this year brought home to many Canadians the reality of Canada’s war in Afghanistan. Despite a campaign by the mass media, recent public opinion polls reveal that around fifty percent of Canadians think the government should bring our kids home. Our Conservative and Liberal leaders insist we must stay the course and continue to back the U.S. government and NATO. The Bloc Quebecois says we should pull out. Jack Layton and the NDP have offered a qualified call for withdrawal. Elizabeth May and the Green Party have maintained a strange silence on the issue.

Hardly a day goes by that we don’t hear some Canadian general or colonel strongly advocate an active military role in Afghanistan. We are told that Canadian forces are fighting a war to defeat the Taliban, defend the democratic government in Kabul, and help with economic reconstruction. But when U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice comes to Canada, she emphasizes that Canada is in Afghanistan to support U.S. policy objectives.

The Geostrategic Implications of the Baloch Insurgency: By Tarique Niazi

Conclusion

Balochistan's strategic significance and natural endowment makes it a critical province for Pakistan. Strategically, Balochistan bridges Central, South, Southeast and East Asia on one end, and Central Asia, the Persian Gulf and the Middle East on the other. Regional states, especially India, cannot reach the energy and trade markets of the Caspian Sea region without transit through Balochistan, which Pakistan denies to India despite repeated pleas on New Delhi's behalf by Washington. India absorbs punitive freight costs by routing its trade goods through the Persian Gulf and the Middle East, even for shipments to Afghanistan. Since 2001, New Delhi has made great strides in reaching out to Baloch leaders, whose National Jirga has now made it a party to the arbitration of their "Accession to Pakistan Pact" in the ICJ (The Nation, November 13).

India is also wary of the Sino-Pakistan naval port on the Arabian Sea, which has raised Beijing's profile in the Indian Ocean. India is even more concerned over Taliban-inspired "militant groups" who operate in Indian-administered Kashmir. As the Taliban are widely believed to have their operational bases in Balochistan, they equally worry India's allies in the region, especially Afghanistan and Iran. Afghanistan resents Pakistan's patronage of the Taliban, which have become the largest threat to its stability since their regrouping in 2003. Iran is also unhappy with Islamabad's policy toward the Taliban due to the group's anti-Shiite theology and the subversive operations of the Taliban's allies, such as Jandallah, in Iran's Sunni-dominated province of Sistan-Balochistan.

Besides these external dynamics, Pakistan is not helping its cause either with its continued military repression of the Baloch national movement, the latest manifestation of which is the alleged abduction by its security forces of 6,000 Baloch youth who have been kept in illegal detention for years (The Nation, November 8). Although none of Pakistan's neighboring countries threatens Pakistan's integrity, every Pakistani's worst fear, however, is that Islamabad's repressive push in Balochistan will cause the province to revisit their accession to Pakistan.

The election of a Democratic majority in the House and Senate is unlikely to result in any serious challenge to the Bush administration’s support for Israeli attacks against the civilian populations of its Arab neighbors and the Israeli government’s ongoing violations of international humanitarian law.

The principal Democratic Party spokesmen on foreign policy will likely be Tom Lantos in the House of Representatives and Joe Biden in the Senate, both of whom have been longstanding and outspoken supporters of a series of right-wing Israeli governments and opponents of the Israeli peace movement. And, despite claims—even within the progressive press—that future House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is a “consistent supporter of human rights,” such humanitarian concerns have never applied to Arabs, since she is a staunch defender of right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his predecessor Ariel Sharon.

War of Aggression Thwarted?: Gordon Prather

Well, perhaps you’d better check out the Iran-Iraq Arms Non-Proliferation Act passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress in 1992.

Then there’s the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act of 1996, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

Then came Title IV of the Iran Freedom Support Act [P.L. 109-293] – also passed by an overwhelmingly bipartisan majority – which principally threatens Russia for its continued construction of a nuclear power plant at Bushehr.

The Iran Freedom Support Act also amends and updates the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act of 1996.

Christian Zionism: An Egregious Threat to US-Mideast Understanding: Council for the National Interest

U.S. Policy in the Middle EastChristian Zionism, a belief that paradise for Christians can only be achieved once Jews are in control of the Holy Land, is gathering strength in the United States and forging alliances that are giving increasingly weird shape to American policy toward the Middle East. The nature of the movement and its detrimental impact on policy was the subject of the 22nd Capitol Hill public hearing presented by the Council for the National Interest yesterday.

A new Zogby International poll commissioned by the CNI Foundation shows that 31 percent of those surveyed in the national poll strongly believe or somewhat believe in the ideas behind Christian Zionism, defined as "the belief that Jews must have all of the promised land, including all of Jerusalem, to facilitate the second coming of the messiah." Other polls bear similar messages, that 53% of Americans believe that Israel was given by God to the Jews (Pew), and that 59% of the American public believes the prophecies contained in the Book of Revelations will come true (CNN/Time.)

Let's Now Charge the Accomplices: John Pilger

In a show trial whose theatrical climax was clearly timed to promote George W Bush in the American midterm elections, Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced to hang. Drivel about "end of an era" and "a new start for Iraq" was promoted by the usual false moral accountants, who uttered not a word about bringing the tyrant’s accomplices to justice. Why are these accomplices not being charged with aiding and abetting crimes against humanity?

Why isn’t George Bush Sr. being charged?

In 1992, a congressional inquiry found that Bush as president had ordered a cover-up to conceal his secret support for Saddam and the illegal arms shipments being sent to Iraq via third countries. Missile technology was shipped to South Africa and Chile, then "on sold" to Iraq, while US Commerce Department records were falsified. Congressman Henry Gonzalez, chairman of the House of Representatives Banking Committee, said: "[We found that] Bush and his advisers financed, equipped and succored the monster . . ."

The Road to Hell: Gary Kamiya Reviews George Packer's "The Assassin's Gate: America in Iraq"

The road to hell

In the definitive book about the Iraq war, liberal hawk George Packer tells the whole story of America's worst foreign-policy debacle -- and reveals how good intentions can go terribly wrong.

By Gary Kamiya

Pages 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

BooksOctober 7, 2005 | Most of the American left lined up against the war in Iraq. But some did not. Among the liberal intellectuals who supported the invasion was George Packer, a staff writer for the New Yorker. His new book, "The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq," proves that holding strong opinions about a subject does not prevent a journalist of integrity from reporting the truth, even if it flies in the face of what he had believed. "The Assassins' Gate" is almost certain to stand as the most comprehensive journalistic account of the greatest foreign-policy debacle in U.S. history.

A funny thing happened to Packer: He went to Iraq. Reporting is a solvent that dissolves illusions quickly if one has an open mind, and Packer brought that and much more. His first-rate reporting from occupied Iraq, and his superb work covering the corridors of power in Washington, offers an extraordinarily wide-ranging portrait of the Iraq war, from its genesis in neoconservative think tanks to its catastrophic execution to its devastating effects on ordinary Americans and Iraqis. Anthony Shadid, in "Night Draws Near: Iraq's People in the Shadow of America's War," offers a deeper portrait of the Iraqi people, but he does not have Packer's majestic scope. "The Assassins' Gate" is the best book yet about the Iraq war.

Neo-Conservatism: R. I. P. by Gary Kamiya

Nov. 14, 2006 | The neoconservatives who dreamed up America's Iraq nightmare are rushing desperately about, searching for scapegoats. Their favorite whipping boy is yesterday's jutting-jawed hero, Donald Rumsfeld, who has been unceremoniously tossed onto the scrapheap. But they also blame the National Security Council, Condoleezza Rice, George Tenet, Paul Bremer, Gen. Tommy Franks and George W. Bush himself. The only thing they don't blame is the actual culprit -- neoconservative ideology itself.

The neocon finger-pointing over who lost Iraq, recently showcased in Vanity Fair, obscures the fact that Bush's war was a laboratory in which their doctrine was tested -- and completely failed. This failure was manifested on the ground and confirmed by the midterms. Most Americans don't even know what neoconservatism is, but they know a failure when they see it -- and they decisively rejected it.

Unfortunately, Bush himself and the key figures in his administration continue to cling, with the fervor of true believers, to neoconservative ideology. Bush has taken some potentially positive steps, like dumping Rumsfeld and replacing him with the more pragmatic Robert Gates, and saying he's open to "any idea" on Iraq. And he is now under enormous pressure, not just from Democrats but also from his own party, to implement profound changes in his Middle East policies. But it remains doubtful whether a figure as dogmatic and inflexible as Bush, who regards his "war on terror" as a sacred duty, will be able to change his approach. It is essential that the fundamental failure of neoconservatism be recognized, to prevent more foreign policy debacles like Iraq.

Neoconservatism is a notoriously slippery and hard-to-define term, in part because its definition has shifted as its enemies have changed. The first generation of neoconservatives, including Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson, Irving Kristol and Norman Podoretz, were former liberals who believed that America needed to stand up and fight communism. Accusing their former colleagues on the left of going soft, they claimed that America's survival and the fate of the free world required toughness, not compromise. (Kristol defined a neoconservative as a "liberal mugged by reality," which goes a long way to explaining why the ideology gained new adherents after 9/11.) The second generation of neocons, including Robert Kagan, William Kristol and Paul Wolfowitz, continued to believe in American exceptionalism and the virtues of force, but they added an idealistic note: America should not just battle evil but also promote democracies around the world. The "good" they sought, however, was not purely altruistic but inseparably bound up with America's self-interest. They wanted America to exercise "benevolent global hegemony." It was axiomatic that what is good for America is good for the rest of the world.

Cheney Pushing Israel Toward Fascism: by Dean Andromidas

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has sealed an agreement to bring into his government Israel's answer to Benito Mussolini. This new partner, Avigdor Lieberman, chairman of the right-wing Yisrael Beitenu (Israel Is Our Home) Party, has called for "transferring" Arab Israelis out of Israel, and bombing both Cairo and Tehran. An emigré from Russian Moldava in 1978, Lieberman also reputedly has ties to the Russian Mafia.

Slated to become Israel's "Minister in charge of strategic questions," Lieberman will be responsible for "coordinating" Israel's policy towards Iran. His entry into the government is widely seen as a signal that Israel would attack Iran, as Israel devolves into a full-fledged fascist state.

But make no mistake: It is not the Israeli Prime Minister who is putting Israel on the road to fascism, but U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and the powerful financial interests who stand behind him. Hell-bent on a new war against Iran, Cheney wants to ensure that he can use Israel as his hand-grenade in his plans for a new Mideast war. According to Israeli intelligence sources, since the end of the Lebanon war, Cheney and his neo-con allies have been working to bring into power their real candidate as Israel's Mussolini, Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu, chairman of the Likud Party and protégé of U.S. synarchist George Shultz.

U. S. versus AIPAC by Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar

Anyone remotely familiar with the American political landscape knows that the Israeli lobby plays a very large role in shaping US foreign policy in the Middle East. This influence has been achieved through clever use of financial muscle and control of large sections of the media from newspapers to cable TV channels to think-tank organisations. Many of the Israeli lobby groups of today can trace their roots to the early 50s, when the American Jewish population needed to organise itself to fight the existing hidden prejudices and discrimination and to break the hidden barriers to their advancement. In their fight to overcome these difficulties they targeted both the media and the politicians. It was thought (correctly) that media played a very important role in creating or destroying the public image of any minority group in the country.

But somehow along the way, some of these organisations were hijacked by Zionists who equated Jewishness with being the loyal supporter of Israel. This minority group set about turning these lobbying groups’ agendas from one of fighting against prejudice to one of working to advance Israel’s interest. A large number of Jewish Americans, naturally did not and do not agree with the aim of these Zionists. This silent majority (such as the Neturei Karta group, Peace now movement etc) is seen by the Zionists as traitors to the state of Israel and not real Jews.

How the Neo-Cons Lost the War: Con Coughlin for the UK Telegraph

Once a week Tony Blair and his closest aides gather in a room at the back of Downing Street for the Prime Minister's weekly video conference with his close friend and ally, President George W. Bush.

It is a select gathering. Apart from Blair himself, the only other regular attendees are Jonathan Powell, his long-serving chief of staff, and Sir Nigel Sheinwald, his highly experienced foreign policy adviser. At the White House the President is usually accompanied by the brooding presence of Vice President Dick Cheney, who sits on a sofa listening in on the conversation, but rarely contributes anything of note.

Perle, Ex-Pentagon Aide, Dropped From SEC's Probe of Hollinger by Otis Bilodeau for Bloomberg

(Oct 23/Bloomberg)-- Richard Perle, a former Pentagon aide and onetime adviser to President George W. Bush, was notified by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the agency dropped its probe into his role at Hollinger International Inc.

Perle, 65, was as a director at Hollinger while then- Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Conrad Black allegedly looted the newspaper company. More than a year after warning Perle in a so-called Wells notice that he might face civil charges for failing to police Black, the SEC this month told him it won't be filing a lawsuit, his lawyer, Dennis Block, said.

``There was absolutely no basis for it,'' Block, a partner at Cadwalalder, Wickersham & Taft LLP in New York, said today in a telephone interview.

The SEC hoped to make Hollinger an example of its three- year-old effort to hold corporate boards more responsible for failing to detect and thwart fraud. This month, the agency also abandoned efforts to sue three other ex-directors, James Thompson, Richard Burt and Marie-Josee Kravis.

John Heine, an SEC spokesman in Washington, declined to comment.

Hollinger, shareholders and the SEC alleged that Black and former President David Radler wrongfully diverted proceeds from sales of company newspapers for their personal use. Hollinger later sued Black, saying in a 513-page report that he and other top executives looted the company of more than $400 million over seven years. Black was ousted as chairman in 2004.

Executive Committee

At its peak, Hollinger published newspapers including London's Daily Telegraph, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Jerusalem Post. The Chicago-based company, now called Sun-Times Media Group Inc., has sold the Telegraph and the Post.

Radler pleaded guilty in September 2005 to a criminal fraud charge and is cooperating with the Justice Department's case against Black. The SEC filed a civil suit against Black, 62, and Radler, 64, in 2004, accusing them of fraud. That case is pending. Black pleaded not guilty last year in federal court in Chicago to criminal fraud charges.

Perle was a member of Hollinger's three-member executive committee, together with Black and Radler, from 1996 to 2003. He stepped down from the company's board this year.

The leading architect of U.S. nuclear arms policy during the administration of President Ronald Reagan, Perle served on the Pentagon's advisory Defense Policy Board for 17 years until he quit in 2004. He's a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington, and advised Bush on foreign policy during the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign.

Perle didn't return calls and an e-mail seeking comment.

`Blown Away'

Black's alleged wrongdoing was investigated internally by former SEC Chairman Richard Breeden and detailed in report filed with the SEC in 2004. In an interview last year, Perle said he was ``blown away'' by the accusations in the report.

Perle received $3.1 million in undisclosed bonuses at Hollinger for running an Internet investment arm called Hollinger Digital, according to Breeden's probe. The unit had lost $49.6 million as of 2003.

The report also said Perle helped convince Black to put $2.5 million of Hollinger's cash into Trireme Partners LP, a venture- capital fund in which Perle and Black participated. Black didn't seek board approval for the related-party transaction, according to the report.

Iran Press Service: Amidst Public Indifference, The Battle Rages For the Experts Assembly

Statement of American Free Press on the Dismissal of Christopher Bollyn

As many people are already aware, we were recently put in a difficult position and felt it had become necessary to distance ourselves from Christopher Bollyn. This decision, made by the entire editorial board, had to be made. So far, we have tried to respect the privacy of Christopher by not discussing our views on this matter with the general public, but following a series of disclosures by Christopher himself, we felt it was necessary to release to the public the details behind his termination.

Recently it came to our attention that, on at least three occasions—publicly and privately—Christopher has given credence to a pernicious charge that American Free Press has been infiltrated and controlled by “Zionists,” thus lending his support to attacks on the credibility and integrity of American Free Press and its staff.

Revolt of the Generals: Richard J. Whalen for The Nation

A revolt is brewing among our retired Army and Marine generals. This rebellion--quiet and nonconfrontational, but remarkable nonetheless--comes not because their beloved forces are bearing the brunt of ground combat in Iraq but because the retirees see the US adventure in Mesopotamia as another Vietnam-like, strategically failed war, and they blame the errant, arrogant civilian leadership at the Pentagon. The dissenters include two generals who led combat troops in Iraq: Maj. Gen. Charles Swannack Jr., who commanded the 82nd Airborne Division, and Maj. Gen. John Batiste, who led the First Infantry Division (the "Big Red One"). These men recently sacrificed their careers by retiring and joining the public protest.

Turkey and Iran Preparing for Operation in N. Iraq: Zaman Daily Newspaper

The Israeli website DEBKA, known for its connections with sources from the Israeli intelligence agency the Mossad, claimed Turkey and Iran are prepared for an operation in northern Iraq.

A new war in the Middle East war is pending, according to DEBKA’s exclusive military sources, which revealed that Turkey and Iran are poised for an imminent and coordinated invasion of the northern Iraq Kurdish dominated autonomous province.

The sources pinpoint the target of the combined Iranian-Turkish offensive as the Kandil Mountains, where some 5,000 Kurdish rebels from Turkey and Iran, and members of the PKK and PJAK respectively, are holed up.

The same sources reported Turkey aims to seize northern Iraqi oil fields centered in the oil-rich town of Kirkuk.

Joseph Ralston, recently appointed by the Bush administration as the special U.S. coordinator in Ankara for the PKK issue, was claimed to be attempting to delay Ankara’s military operation against Iraqi Kurdistan. The website also wrote the United States reported Turkey’s decision of obtaining Kirkuk will damage the interest of the U.S. in Iraq.

Challenging the Power of the Jewish Lobby: What Should Be Done? by James Petras

A number of writers have recently written critical articles or reviews about the power of the pro-Israel or Jewish Lobby and its influence on US policy in the Middle East. Most of these writings emphasize the power of the lobby over Congress, the two major parties (especially the Democrats) and the Executive branch. Some even describe the pro-Israel lobbies and the allied Jewish federations, the numerous propaganda institutes described as ‘think tanks’, publications as well as their influence or control over the mass media, from Hollywood, the print media, television to corporate “public” radio. However these critics and analysts paint themselves into a corner, attributing to the Jewish lobby so much power as to virtually incapacitate any effort to counter its influence and change the direction of US policy. The image of a near-omniscient and omnipotent Jewish lobby overlooks its vulnerability and significant issues around which an opposition or counter-hegemonic movement can be organized in the United States.

Why Did the Trade Center Skyscrapers Collapse? by Morgan Reynolds

To explain the unanticipated free-fall collapses of the twin towers at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, mainstream experts (also see The American Professional Constructor, October 2004, pp. 12–18) offer a three-stage argument: 1) an airplane impact weakened each structure, 2) an intense fire thermally weakened structural components that may have suffered damage to fireproofing materials, causing buckling failures, which, in turn, 3) allowed the upper floors to pancake onto the floors below.

Many will nod their head, OK, that does it and go back to watching the NBA finals or whatever, but I find this theory just about as satisfying as the fantastic conspiracy theory that "19 young Arabs acting at the behest of Islamist extremists headquartered in distant Afghanistan" caused 9/11. The government’s collapse theory is highly vulnerable on its own terms, but its blinkered narrowness and lack of breadth is the paramount defect unshared by its principal scientific rival – controlled demolition. Only professional demolition appears to account for the full range of facts associated with the collapses of WTC 1 (North Tower), WTC 2 (South Tower), and the much-overlooked collapse of the 47-story WTC building 7 at 5:21 pm on that fateful day.

AFP Conference Sets Record

During the conference, John Stadtmiller, founder of the popular Republic Broadcasting Network (RBN) and host of RBN’s “The National Intel Report,” not only spoke to the conference about building patriotic outreach but he also broadcast his program live from the conference, interviewing notable attendees. Likewise with AFP correspondent Michael Collins Piper who also hosts his own nightly program on RBN. For more about RBN and its broadcasts, see the bottom of page 19 of this issue of AFP.

Persian Scholar Kaveh Farrokh Responds to Toronto Sun Lunacy in Advocating "Nuking" Iran

September 2nd, 2006

Dear Editors of the Toronto Sun,

I was very surprised to see your distinguished paper publish a qualitatively substandard article by Michael Coren, who openly advocates the nuking of Iran and Iranians in a piece entitled "We Should Nuke Iran".

At a time when rational thought and intelligence discourse are vitally in need, the publication of hate literature and racist articles is precisely what serves to undermine those who seek constructive alternatives to present day geopolitical crises. Mr. Coren proves unable (or unwilling) to separate the political machinations of a government versus the people who are unable to control the actions or statements of its leadership.

Mr. Coren displays a profound lack of knowledge of (a) current events and (b) historical factors. Consideration could be given to appropriate funds to send Mr. Coren to take courses to raise Mr. Coren's current level of education and intellect (I use the latter term with considerable latitude and license here). Put simply: Mr. Coren is in desperate need of schooling.

Mr. Coren may also benefit from therapeutic measures aimed at addressing his pathological dislike of certain ethnic groups. To my knowledge, there are plenty of Psychiatrists available who are more than willing to work with patients in need of attitude correction with respect to violent racialist thinking.

The Toronto Sun is a highly respected newspaper that has featured distinguished and world renowned experts such as Eric Margolis. The publication of Coren's fascist-style ravings are a travesty to not only your own reputation but against the very foundations of honest journalism.

I end this note of protest with old Persian proverb:

Those who choose to wield the pen are entrusted with an awesome responsibility to the people...

With the Utmost Concern

THe CIA's "World Wide Attack Matrix"

Former Baluchistan Governor and Chief Minister Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, who served Pakistani leaders like President Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (an ethnic Sindhi who was executed by a U.S.-backed military government) and ousted and jailed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was recently brutally assassinated by the CIA- and US Special Forces-backed security forces of Pakistan's dictator General Pervez Musharraf (a so-called ally of the Bush-Cheney-Blair "Global War on Terror"). Bugti, the charismatic 79-year Baluchi leader, was killed after he went underground in support of Baluchi autonomist forces who have become increasingly opposed to Punjabi human rights violations against ethnic Baluchis. The Baluchi Liberation Army responded to Punjabi aggression against Baluchis by launching attacks against natural gas pipelines in Baluchistan — tactics that immediately earned the wrath of the oil-centric Bush-Cheney regime. Against the wishes of Pakistan's political and intelligence establishment, Musharraf ordered his forces to kill Bugti and against Muslim traditions, Bugti's body — likely mutilated in the air attack assassination — has not been returned to the family for burial in accordance with Muslim religious tenets. Musharraf's actions received the full backing of the Bush administration, which defended the action as necessary to preserve a "strong and unified" Pakistan. The Bush crime cartel wants to clear Baluchistan of troublesome independence-minded tribal leaders like Bugti before construction gets fully underway on the Pakistan leg of the Central Asian Gas pipeline (CentGas) from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and to the Arabian Sea in Baluchistan. The Bush cartel also wants to ensure that Baluchistan secessionists do not interfere in future military actions across the Pakistani Baluchistan border into Iranian Baluchistan.

Gingrich Opposed to U. S. Strike on Iran: Washington Times

ROME -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich this week moved a step further toward casting himself as the conservative alternative to Sen. John McCain in a possible run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. In an impromptu speech during a Mediterranean cruise that hosted scores of conservative donors and activists, the Georgia Republican expressed unexpected skepticism about prospects of military intervention to halt Iran's nuclear program.

"I am opposed to a military strike on Iran because I don't think it accomplishes very much in the long run," said Mr. Gingrich, who supported the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and has been a strong defender of Israel. "I think if this regime [in Iran] is so dangerous that we can't afford to let them have nuclear weapons, we need a strategy to replace the regime," Mr. Gingrich said. "And the first place you start is where Ronald Reagan did in Eastern Europe with a comprehensive strategy that relied on economic, political, diplomatic, information and intelligence" means.

The statement represented a significant modification of one of his most hawkish foreign-policy views.

Will oil impose US-Iranian reconciliation? by Hani Asfour

Following the recent war in Lebanon, there was much hype that a war with Iran would be next. Claims of a grand conspiracy have been circulating about a new Middle East composed of fractious ethno-states subservient to an all-powerful Israel. The prospect for war has become more palpable due to recent rumors that Israel's attack in Lebanon was a mere dress rehearsal for the real war with Tehran.

Despite Washington's cold reception of Iran's August 22 response to the nuclear offer from the Permanent Five and Germany, the White House's best move remains to engage Iran. Many high-level experts in the United States and Europe have been urging the Bush administration to talk to Tehran, including former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. US-Iran relations are at a "turning point," he has argued in the media, where Iran can become "a pillar of stability and progress in the region" if it is willing to forgo its revolutionary ethos.

Dialogue with Iran would address Iran's increasing regional responsibility, including its nuclear ambitions, its role in pacifying Iraq, and in disarming Hizbullah. Making progress on all these fronts serves larger American strategic goals for regional stability, especially Washington's imperative to secure the free flow of energy across Eurasia. The US must therefore carefully consider the following strategic concerns before deciding on any course of action.

Britain's dirty secret: how Britain helped Israel make the A-bomb in the 1960s by Meirion Jones

We can reveal that while Harold Wilson was prime minister the UK supplied Israel with small quantities of plutonium despite a warning from British intelligence that it might "make a material contribution to an Israeli weapons programme". This, by enabling Israel to study the properties of plutonium before its own supplies came on line, could have taken months off the time it needed to make a weapon. Britain also sold Israel a whole range of other exotic chemicals, including uranium-235, beryllium and lithium-6, which are used in atom bombs and even hydrogen bombs. And in Harold Macmillan's time we supplied the heavy water that allowed Israel to start up its own plutonium production facility at Dimona - heavy water that British intelligence estimated would enable Israel to make "six nuclear weapons a year".

After we exposed the sale of the heavy water on Newsnight last August, the government assured the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that all Britain did was sell some heavy water back to Norway. Using the Freedom of Information Act, we have now obtained previously top-secret papers which show not only that Norway was a mere cover for the Israel deal, but that Britain made hundreds of other secret shipments of nuclear materials to Israel in the 1950s and 1960s.

Michael Collins Piper Exposes Hufschmid Link to Zionist Rupert Murdoch

Internet Rumor-Monger Hufschmid Indicted for Throwing
Bombs at Anti-Zionist Movement in the Guise of “Truth
Seeking”

Hufschmid’s Connection to Zionist Billionaire Rupert
Murdoch Unraveled!

Please post and distribute widely to expose Hufschmid
for the troublemaker that he is.

What follows is a summary of the August 31 broadcast
of Piper’s talk forum on rbnlive.com.

On the August 31 broadcast of his nightly radio talk
forum on rbnlive.com, on the Republic Broadcasting
Network, American Free Press correspondent Michael
Collins Piper addressed what he called "The Hufschmid
Conundum," the puzzle surrounding the bizarre attacks
by Eric Hufschmid on many longtime anti-Zionist
writers and activists including Piper himself (and his
colleagues at American Free Press and The Spotlight)
as well as individuals such as Mark Glenn, Mark
Farrell, David Duke and many, many others too numerous
to mention.

Piper quoted a letter writer who said correctly that
"Eric spends most of his time making false allegations
against many good people. he seldom has any proof, yet
he boldly releases his ideas or opinions as fact, and
directly attacks 'the mark' of the day. Eric is always
assuming his mark as guilty until proven innocent."

Piper noted that although Hufschmid is constantly
attacking people as "Zionists" or as "Zionist agents,"
Hufschmid himself had little, if anything, to say
about the obvious role of Israel and its intelligence
agency, the Mossad, in his own book and video about
9-11.

Piper noted that Hufschmid literally received millions
of dollars in free publicity regarding his
(Hufschmid's) book on the "Penn and Teller" broadcast
which is a product of the Zionist-controlled
"Showtime" network.

Piper noted that few REAL anti-Zionists ever receive
that kind of publicity and suggested that perhaps the
actual intent of Penn & Teller's "attack" on Hufschmid
was to redirect people to a source on 9-11 that does
NOT emphase Israeli complicity in the attack.

Piper noted the parallel theme in a recent essay by
Sen. John McCain of Arizona, published in the
September issue of POPULAR MECHANICS which suggests
that critics of the U.S. government's 9-11 thesis are
putting the blame on "America" for the attack; in
short, McCain was simply not mentioning the well-known
fact that many (if not most) critics of the U.S.
government lies about 9-11 contend—as American Free
Press journalist Christopher Bollyn has contended from
the beginning—that Israel and its Mossad was the prime
mover behind 9-11. So McCain and Hufschmid have
essentially taken the same approach.

Although Hufschmid talks on his website about an
Israeli connection, it is Hufschmid's book which has
been given the widespread international publicity.
This, said Piper, constitutes a classic "limited
hangout"---that is, giving "some" of the story, but
not "all" of it. That is, Hufschmid falls to emphasize
the strong evidence connecting Israel to the attack.

In the meantime, while pretending to be a supporter of
American Free Press journalist Christopher
Bollyn—Piper's longtime friend and colleague—Hufschmid
has been trying to drive a wedge between Bollyn and
Piper (and between Bollyn and his own employer,
American Free Press) by telling worldwide audiences
via internet broadcasts and on his lie-packed website
that American Free Press has NOT been publishing
Bollyn's work and trying to suppress it.

Piper previously demonstrated to his audience that
American Free Press had indeed published the articles
by Bollyn that Hufschmid falsely claimed had never
been published, and the one article that was not
immediately published (because it arrived too late)
was later reworked into other material by Bollyn
published by American Free Press.

Unfortunately, many people who don't read either the
published version of "AFP" or its complete on-line
subscription version, have been believing Hufschmid's
lies about Bollyn and AFP and about many other things.
Most of these people also believe Hufschmid's bizarre
and outlandish claim that Piper is a Zionist, despite
the fact that Piper has devoted 26 years of his 46
years to writing and speaking about the dangers of
Zionism, in such books as

FINAL JUDGMENT, detailing the Mossad link to the JFK
assassination conspiracy (over JFK's efforts to stop
israel from building nuclear weapons),

THE HIGH PRIESTS OF WAR, exposing the secret history
of the Zionist neo-conservatives and their drive for
war against Iraq and Iran and Syria and the rest of
the Muslim world,

THE NEW JERUSALEM: ZIONIST POWER IN AMERICA, which
outlines the amazing power of Zionism in America, and

BEST WITNESS, which tells the story of Mel
Mermelstein's efforts to break the back of the
Holocaust Revisionist movement—an effort which failed
and failed badly.

In addition, Piper noted, AFP (and The SPOTLIGHT
before it) have published literally hundreds—maybe a
thousand?—of articles by Christopher Bollyn focusing
on the intrigues of Israel and the Zionist movement,
proving, beyond any question, that Hufschmid is lying
when he says that AFP is trying to suppress either the
works of Bollyn—whom Piper has always called "the best
journalist in America, bar none"—or discussion of the
subject of Zionism.

Piper believes that "The Hufschmid Conundrum" can be
explained by the fact, as Hufschmid himself admitted
in an article on his website, that Hufschmid's
half-sister is married to the son of Zionist
billionaire Rupert Murdoch
. This was early on and
Hufschmid actually suggested that Murdoch himiself may
have been aware of Hufschmid's work.

Incredibly, though, Hufschmid makes the lame
suggestion that Murdoch—one of the most powerful
Zionists on the face of the planet—may be one of the
"good" guys (of all things). Hufschmid even said that
he knew little about Murdoch until Murdoch's
publication, THE WEEKLY STANDARD, edited by Zionist
neo-conservative William Kristol (exposed thoroughly
in Piper's book THE HIGH PRIESTS OF WAR) had requested
a copy of Hufschmid's book.

Hufschmid's bizarre "explanation" of the "connection"
between himself and Murdoch, in Piper's estimation,
was simply a clever concoction by Hufschmid to explain
away his Murdoch connection in a blizzard of words in
order to cover up the fact that he (Hufschmid) was
actually being promoted by the Murdoch empire in order
to maintain a handle on "the controlled opposition"
surrounding speculation regarding the 9-11 terrorist
attacks, focusing attention on a book that talked
about the forensics of the 9-11 attacks but keeping
the lid on the Zionist connection to that tragic
event.

Piper suggested that Hufschmid certainly knew that
once his name came into the fore that people would
(quite correctly) start researching into the name
"Hufschmid" and ultimately discover the
Hufschmid-Murdoch connection and that this was
Hufschmid's way of laying it on the table in a
relatively confusing way that would convince some
gullible people that Hufschmid was a "real" truth
seeker. But Hufschmid himself actually raised the
question as to whether he himself was being used in
some "psy-ops" by the Murdoch empire and the Zionist
network
.

Piper commented that this was a classic Mossad tactic:
"hiding in plain sight." In other words, Hufschmid put
the Murdoch connection out there so that if anyone
ever questioned him on it—as people are now doing, and
rightly so—he could say, "Oh I never kept it a
secret."

Piper also noted the interesting fact that Hufschmid's
attack on Piper and American Free Press and the
campaign to split off AFP's star reporter—Christopher
Bollyn—from AFP, and thereby deprive AFP of Bollyn's
reportage, came precisely at the time when AFP was
about to launch its international conference on Labor
Day weekend featuring a historic seminar on the Lies
of 9-11, with Bollyn as well as famed 9-11 hero and
World Trade Center survivor, William Rodriguez, and
Ellen Mariani, widow of 9-11 victim Neal Mariani.

What better way, Piper asked, than to disrupt a major
event to be attended by some 300 people including some
from around the world?

Piper also noted that some time ago Hufschmid had also
been privy to Piper's then-manuscript (which Hufschmid
knew was soon to be published) entitled THE JUDAS
GOATS, which features an entire chapter devoted to the
subject of how Rupert Murdoch and his media empire
(including Fox News) had been set up by the
billionaire Zionist families Rothschild, Oppenheimer
and Bronfman to provide a "controlled" so-called
"conservative alternative"—that is, a classic
"controlled opposition"—to the Zionist-dominated
"liberal" networks such as ABC, CBS, and NBC.

Hufschmid knew that publication of THE JUDAS GOATS
would be the first time that the nationalist-patriot
movement would see the ENTIRE Murdoch story outlined
in the context of a detailed book describing how the
Zionist movement had worked for years to infiltrate
and destroy the nationalist movement in America, that
many thousands of people would read about Murdoch, in
detail, for the first time and learn the truth of
"who" is really behind this media empire (with which
Hufschmid is intimately connected): his half-sister is
an heir, by marriage, to billions in Zionist money.

Hufschmid, thus, was rightly concerned that as more
and more people learned about Murdoch that they would
start doing their own research and discovering the
Hufschmid connection.

Clearly, says Piper, Hufschmid NEEDED to discredit
Piper and American Free Press and damage their
relationship with Christopher Bollyn.

Piper pointed out that he had been writing about
Murdoch for many years, going back to the early 1980s
when he wrote about Murdoch in The SPOTLIGHT
newspaper, utilizing "inside" data about Murdoch from
one of Murdoch's former Australian associates,
international businessman and prominent Catholic
layman, Henry Fischer, long known for his close ties
to the traditionalist Catholic movement and for his
intimate connections to anti-Zionist elements inside
the Vatican and the Catholic Church worldwide. Fischer
is even mentioned, Piper noted, in several books by
mainstream authors about Murdoch.

But Fischer's "inside" information on Murdoch's
Rothschild-Oppenheimer-Bronfman connection, making him
part of the "Billionaire Gang of Four," is never
mentioned in those “mainstream” volumes!

All of this taken together explains the truth about
"The Hufschmid Conundrum."

Piper urged people to provide financial support
directly to Christopher Bollyn in assisting Bollyn in
his legal case against the police state thugs who
attacked him and hit him with a life-threatening taser
gun in his own front yard in Hoffman Estates,
Illinois.

Contributions made out to "Christopher Bollyn" can be
sent to AFP, 645 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, #100,
Washington, DC 20003.
