Dear President Trump: When it comes to war in Iran, remember Caesar

The empire continues to be undermined, not by the left but the so-called right.  Those closest to Caesar heralding the death of Caesar.  Today it is the Pentagon generals, the intelligence community, the neocons and the defense contractors doing everything but call for a parade at the death of Soleimani.

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman once enlighteningly told Charlie Rose that the Iraq War had been worth it because after putting up with all that terrorism it was high time the United States went in with “a big stick” and told people in the Middle East to “suck on this.” He brings similar eloquence and acuity to the current conflict with Iran, surmising, just after the Soleimani assassination, that one day the Iranians “may name a street in Tehran after President Trump.”

Lowry: Trump is neither neocon nor isolationist

Suddenly, the neocons had cachet again (Vox warned that “the Iraq War hawks are back”), and we were about to launch yet another endless war. Trump’s decision to kill Soleimani, New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote, repeating a common refrain, “has brought the United States to the brink of a devastating new conflict in the Middle East.”

There’s no doubt that the operation against Soleimani carried risks, but it didn’t transform Trump into a conventional interventionist. In fact, taking out Soleimani was wholly consistent with the president’s approach to the world that can’t be plotted on a simple hawk/dove or neocon/isolationist axis. As a Jacksonian, Trump is none of the above, combining a willingness to whack our enemies with a distaste for ambitious foreign interventions.

Lincoln Chafee Keeps Ripping ‘Delusional’ Neocons and Democrats Who Compromise With Them

Lincoln Chafee has no taste for neoconservative fantasies, or for the politicians of both major parties who entertain them.

That may not make him the winner of the Democratic presidential contest that the former Rhode Island senator and governor has entered—Chafee’s poll numbers are low, and his campaign has a quirky, do-it-yourself feel that tends to earn him marginal media coverage at best. But it could make him a duly disruptive voice in the Democratic debates that are scheduled to begin in October.

Gabbard: Everybody knows 'Hillary is a warmonger'

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard called Hillary Clinton a “warmonger” and blasted her foreign policy credentials.

Appearing on Fox News’s Tucker Carlson Tonight, the Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii agreed with Carlson’s assessment that Clinton was a “neocon,” or neoconservative.

“Look to her influence on going to launch regime change over in Syria, Libya,” Gabbard said. “You look throughout — obviously, her support for the war in Iraq — throughout her history. Her track record is well known.”

The mainstream media are carefully sidestepping the method behind America’s seeming madness in assassinating Islamic Revolutionary Guard general Qassim Suleimani to start the New Year. The logic behind the assassination was a long-standing application of U.S. global policy, not just a personality quirk of Donald Trump’s impulsive action. His assassination of Iranian military leader Suleimani was indeed a unilateral act of war in violation of international law, but it was a logical step in a long-standing U.S. strategy. It was explicitly authorized by the Senate in the funding bill for the Pentagon that it passed last year.

After joking that “it’s going to be really hard to live with myself if I don’t get to sit in a chair all day long for weeks at a time listening to people talk about Rudy Giuliani” and that House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., would have wiretapped him if he had talked to Giuliani, Paul tweeted, “You do have to wonder how he was the best the President could think of for a lawyer — ‘hey, get me that guy who spills his guts on CNN and butt dials everyone in Washington. He can keep a secret!’”

Paul then turned his sights on former national security adviser John Bolton, describing him as “what's his name, the guy who kept trying to start all the wars but then got fired on twitter.” He commented that Bolton was one of many “hawks the President hired, didn’t listen to, got mad at and fired. Neocon Apprentice really wasn’t very well thought out.” Paul praised Trump’s foreign policy instincts as “pretty good,” thought that the president would describe them as “perfect” and joked that “President Trump grades phone calls the way he scores his golf game, believe me a few mulligans are taken.”

In a column calling for conservatives and Republicans to distance themselves from racists and anti-Semites, neoconservative columnist Jonathan Tobin deceived readers of the New York Post and the fringe left-wing Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Writing about the dispute between the John Birch Society and National Review founder William Buckley, Tobin got the facts exactly backwards. In addition to lying about and demonizing the JBS with blatant falsehoods, Tobin praised Buckley as “conservatism’s intellectual leader,” completely ignoring Buckley’s controversial writings calling for whites, as the “advanced race,” to use force to keep blacks from voting in order to preserve “civilization” in the face of “Negro backwardness.”

FISA contradicts the Constitution

Congress enacted the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act in 1978 in response to the unlawful surveillance of Americans by the FBI and the CIA during the Watergate era. President Richard Nixon — who famously quipped after leaving office that “when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal” — used the FBI and the CIA to spy on his political opponents.

The stated reason was national security. Nixon claimed that foreign agents physically present in the U.S. agitated and aggravated his political opponents to produce the great public unrest in America in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and thus diminished Americans’ appetite for fighting the Vietnam War. There was, of course, no evidence to support that view, but the neocons in Congress and the military-industrial complex supported it even after Nixon left office.
