Rand Paul Battles The Rise Of Neocons Within The Trump Administration

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) emerged as one of President Donald Trump’s top confidants in 2017 as they worked together on health care, tax reform and other key issues. Paul is trying to get the ear of Trump yet again as he tries to stop him from appointing neocons into key posts of his administration.
Paul is leading the way to oppose Trump’s picks for CIA Director and Secretary of State. Trump has tapped Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State, who Paul believes is a departure to George W. Bush-era foreign policy.

Sen. Rand Paul: Why I can't support neocons Pompeo at State, Haspel at CIA and Bolton as NSA

The neocons have been so completely and regularly wrong for decades now that it’s almost unimaginable to believe they would ever be in a position to advise a president again – let alone to wield the kind of power they will have if they lead some of our nation’s most powerful institutions.
Yet the past week has brought such a resurgence of this failed ideology that you would be forgiven for thinking we had time-traveled back to 2003.

Rand Paul: Why Is Trump Nominating Neocons Instead Of America Firsters?

If Paul’s unhappy now, just wait until Trump picks John Bolton to replace H.R. McMaster. We’ll have Paul muttering about neocons in his sleep, if he’s not already. Anyway, Paul committed himself to obstruction on both nominees, but so far hasn’t used the F-word:

In Angry Tweetstorm, Ron Paul Lashes Out At "Neocon" Trump

Roughly around the time Trump started his Afghanistan speech, Ron Paul tweeted out a cautiously optimistic note: "Hoping for the best in tonight's @realDonaldTrump speech but fearful that foreign intervention is only going to get worse.  #Afghanistan." Alas it was not meant to be, and over 20 tweets later in what proved to be the angriest tweetstorm of the night, Ron Paul had come to a conclusion: Trump is now nothing more than the latest neocon, one whom even Lindsey Graham applauded.
Below is a chronological rundown of Ron Paul's progressively angier tweets, as he was live commenting on Trump's speech:

Trump supporters shocked: Has he gone Neocon over night?

Senator Rand Paul made his opposition to any would-be war on Syria abundantly clear in a manner that ought to resonate with President Trump.

The Senator from Kentucky and son of former Congressman Dr. Ron Paul, Tweeted Donald Trump’s erstwhile anti-war message back at him as a kind of friendly reminder of why people like me endorsed Trump in his election against the arch-war monger Hillary Clinton.

IS MCCAIN HIJACKING TRUMP'S FOREIGN POLICY?

“The senator from Kentucky,” said John McCain, speaking of his colleague Rand Paul, “is working for Vladimir Putin … and I do not say that lightly.”
What did Sen. Paul do to deserve being called a hireling of Vladimir Putin?
He declined to support McCain’s call for a unanimous Senate vote to bring Montenegro into NATO as the 29th member of a Cold War alliance President Trump has called “obsolete.”

Is Trump Really Considering an Infamous Neocon for State Department Post?

Rand Paul is already promising to block infamous neocon Elliott Abrams from being confirmed as the second-highest position in the State Department, ahead of the latter’s meeting with President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

Should Paul refuse to vote for Abrams, it would be nearly impossible for Abrams to pass through the 21-member Foreign Affairs Committee, of 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats, unless a Democrat swings in favor of him.

RAND PAUL TO TRUMP: DON’T LET NEOCONS RUN STATE DEPARTMENT

Rand Paul Tells Democrats: “Hillary Clinton is a Neocon!”

Paul explained that, “Cheney’s been wrong about most foreign policy decisions for the last thirty years,” and that the war in Iraq has destabilized the region. Matthews next brought up the newly-found love affair that some Republican hawks have with Marco Rubio, but Paul used this opportunity to bring up an often-missed point: the many neoconservatives in the GOP field share a common foreign policy with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

Rand Paul Is Right: Republican Neocons Created ISIS

Senator Rand Paul is spot on.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was created and is fueled by Mr. Paul's lobotomized neocon rivals.

In other words, to paraphrase Walt Kelly's Pogo about the Vietnam War, Mr. Paul's foreign policy detractors have met the enemy, and they are them!

With the predictability of the sun rising in the East and setting in the West, power vacuums in primitive political cultures give birth to extremists--religious or otherwise. There are no exceptions. Ruthlessness and fanaticism flourish in a Hobbesian state of nature.

Paul On GOP Neocons, Krauthammer: Sometimes They’re ‘Just Wrong’

Sen. Rand Paul kicked off his 2016 presidential bid by calling out several factions of the Republican Party, including the “neocon” branch of the GOP that Paul says has a war-hawk mentality whose policies make the U.S. “less safe as a nation.”

Speaking with Fox News Wednesday, Paul addressed criticism from conservative Fox contributor Charles Krauthammer, saying that “neocons” in the Republican Party are “actually much closer to President Obama than I am.” The Kentucky Republican also detailed how America’s aggressive foreign policy stances often “backfire” and that Islamic State of Iraq and Syria militants are using “our American arms.”

RAND HITS BACK AT ‘JUVENILE’ ‘NEOCON COMMUNITY’ CRITICS

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) shot back at his “juvenile” critics who he said were members of the “neocon community” during an interview broadcast on Tuesday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel.
Rand responded to an attack ad that played a clip of him saying Iran wasn’t a threat to the US’ national security by stating, “things do change over time. Also, I wasn’t campaigning for myself, I was campaigning to help my father at the time. But I would say that almost every element of the ad’s a lie. I mean, they say I’m helping the president. I’m actually one who has said to the president that this deal, when it becomes final, has to be finalized by Congress, and I said I’ve done that to actually strengthen the president’s hand. But I do want him negotiating from a position of strength,” which he said Obama isn’t, and expressed his concern over Iran’s “lack of sincerity” due to their rhetoric, sponsorship of terrorism, and threatening of Israel, and his belief they should never be trusted with a nuke.
He continued, “I have no idea really who these people are [behind the ad]. But I think that they’re–I would say they’re part of the neocon community. The neoconservatives sort of believe, these are the same people who wanted to give arms to Gaddafi, and then the next years, wanted to topple Gaddafi. They’ve been on both sides of every war, they only thing consistent about their message is, ‘we should always be at war.'”

Pitiful Neocon Hit Piece Exposes a Rand Paul Blogger for Not Loving War

The neoconservative Washington Free Beacon has discovered  some amazing inside information relating to Sen. Rand Paul's likely presidential run: some of Sen. Paul's supporters—get this—oppose endless military intervention.
That's not news to anyone here; it's not news to anyone, anywhere, in fact. And yet The Free Beacon has dedicated 700 words to the cause of chronicling one Paul campaign blogger's very ordinary libertarian views. Here's how the The WFB headlines its piece on Marianne Copenhaver (a.k.a. "Libertarian Girl" ), who was hired part-time to do social media work for Paul:

Can Rand Paul defeat neocon Hillary?

U.S. foreign policy is a bipartisan fiasco. President George W. Bush gave the American people Iraq, the gift that keeps on giving. President Barack Obama is a slightly more reluctant warrior, but he is taking the country back into Iraq.

Hillary Clinton, the unannounced Democratic front-runner for 2016, supported her husband’s misbegotten attempt at nation-building in Kosovo and led the drive for war in Libya, which is unraveling. Most of Clinton’s potential GOP opponents share Washington’s bomb, invade, and occupy consensus.

Rand Paul to Bush era Neocons… “Bring it on!”

“Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) lashed out at neoconservatives on Tuesday for criticizing his efforts to inject a brand of libertarianism into Republican Party foreign policy dogma, telling them that he won’t back down from the internal opposition.

But the Kentucky Republican’s diatribe against the GOP’s neocon wing is the latest in an ongoing internal battle that has many Republicans and conservatives digging in, on both sides.”

Rand Paul To Neocons: ‘Sharpen Your Knives’ For The GOP Foreign Policy Fight

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) lashed out at neoconservatives on Tuesday for criticizing his efforts to inject a brand of libertarianism into Republican Party foreign policy dogma, telling them that he won’t back down from the internal opposition.

“The knives are out for conservatives who dare question unlimited involvement in foreign wars,” Paul wrote in a National Review piece:

Rand Paul tries to reason with Charles Krauthammer on Iran

Thoughts:

1. What is Charles Krauthammer advocating as an alternative to negotiations, aside from increased bellicosity?

2. Hypothetically speaking– how much faith do you have that the Obama regime could execute military operations against Iran any more successfully than it launched healthcare.gov?

3. A nuclear Iran is inevitable. But on the bright side: Israel has a nuclear arsenal capable of wiping the Middle East off the face of the Earth. Let us hope the threat of mutually assured destruction is motivation enough to keep the peace.

Rand Is Not Going Neocon! Stop The Nonsense!

I swear, it is so obvious that people, like the liberty brethren that posted the thread about the Foreign Policy magazine article, has already long made up their mind about Rand and simply look for evidence to validate their feelings and like humans in nature, try to convert others to agree....

Rand has NOT gone neocon. If you read his careful words, he is trying to do the RIGHT thing and broaden his appeal. The ONLY way he can win, as he is a smarter politician than his father and Dad admits it, is to appeal to audiences outside the loyal base.
