Peter Beinart's Misguided Attack on Me, David Corn et al. Over 'Neocon'

Peter Beinart wants everyone to stop talking about the neoconservatives. Perhaps, if we stop talking about them, they’ll go away? No, it’s not that. Beinart, of course, was once a fellow traveler of sorts with the neocons, as editor of The New Republic from the mid-1990s through the mid-2000s, when its publisher at the time, Marty Peretz, would reasonably qualify as a neocon or “quasi-neocon.” In that post, Beinart famously supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and then, even more famously—as that war degenerated into a catastrophic series of horrors—apologized for his support.

In a recent piece in The Daily Beast, Beinart takes several writers to task, including me, David Corn of Mother Jones, and Ann McFeatters of the Chicago Sun-Times for, well, talking about neoconservatives and their penchant for war—in particular because many of their tribe are among the loudest backers of war against Syria.

Why Joe Lieberman And A Neocon Think Tank Are Perfect For Each Other

In a bid to lend a patina of “bipartisanship” to its ideas, the neoconservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI) has made former Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) the co-chair of its newest foreign policy initiative. The move has been met with raised eyebrows, as progressives have not considered Joe Lieberman an authentic representative of their foreign policy positions for quite some time, if they ever did in the first place.

Lieberman will co-chair the new “American Internationalism Project” with former Senator John Kyl (R-AZ). As the project is intended to “rebuild and reshape a bipartisan consensus around American global leadership and engagement,” Lieberman’s participation is aimed at blunting the perception that anything coming out of AEI is a dogmatically Republican plan. AEI generally hews to a hardline neoconservative standard on foreign policy; its staff in the area includes former Bush Administration officials John Bolton, Richard Perle, and Marc Thiessen.

The Neocon/Liberal Empire

The difference between neocons and liberals is one of emphasis. Both groups believe in all the same things. Big government at home, more and more intrusive all the time, open borders (neocons like illegal aliens for their cheap labor, liberals like them because they help expand the welfare state), and empire abroad, with our money and troops being used to remake a reluctant world over into their vision of the future.

American voters are asked to choose between the basically identical programs of the Democrats, dominated by liberals, and the Republicans, dominated by neocons. Now, the rhetoric differs somewhat. Democrats like to talk about peace and freedom, while Republicans talk about freedom and peace. Both agree about peace — they define it as preemptive invasions of just about everybody, our troops spread out all over the world, and a foreign policy designed to destabilize any country that doesn't allow Goldman-Sachs to move in and tell everybody what to do. The difference is that Democrats are more likely to say they're helping the people they invade, while the Republicans like to say that they're fighting over there so we won't have to fight over here. They're both wrong, of course.

RACHEL MADDOW FACT CHECKS THE neoCON NUTS AT THE CPAC CON-vention

The editorial viewpoint from the whacky Left totally diminishes any valid criticism of crazed NeoCons. Case in point read the below description from The United Voice Of America.

CPAC is a CON-vention for neoCONS. What does this convention consist of ? Well probably allot of the same as the Tea-Klus-Klan consist of. Anti-government, conspiracy theorist, extremist, hypocrites, and under occurrence of hate groups. Why do we even pretend to make a distinction between the Tea Party and the Republicans anyways? They are one and the same. Anyways, Rachel Maddow fact checks these ditto heads false accusations. Know what, Rachel does a good job of it. After reviewing her facts, the only word that came to mind was CPAC FAIL.
