After 9/11, this view mirrored the creed of American neoconservatives, who targeted the austere Wahhabi brand of Islam as a threat equivalent to that once posed by international communism. None were – or are – more vocal and visible opponents of Wahhabism than the neoconservative author and ex-Trotskyite Stephen Schwartz.
